Diversity Training in University Sports
Today, diversity is integral
to the success of college athletic departments and sports
teams. Consider just a few of the following reasons and ask
yourself if your school can afford not to offer diversity
training.
- Diversity training is now a requirement for continued athletic
department certification by the NCAA.
- Diversity can dramatically affect your ability to recruit top
athletes and field top teams. Issues of race, gender, sexual
orientation, culture, even nationality and language can all affect
whether athletes feel accepted and welcome at your institution.
- Diversity can affect how you coach or train athletes, your
expectations of them and your assessments about playing time
and players' competitive talents.
- Diversity affects your team's chemistry, synergy, teamwork,
competitiveness, performance and ability to win.
- Diversity issues can affect your ability to recruit and retain
top members of your coaching staff, staff salaries and compensation
and interpersonal effectiveness.
- Diversity can positively or negatively affect your career prospects
and opportunities for advancement in college athletics.
- Diversity affects your ability to create a market for women's
sports, increase ticket sales in ethnic niche markets and appeal
to alumni.
- Diversity can be a public relations bonanza or a public relations
nightmare (ethnic mascots). It's your choice.
- Diversity can create legal liability, from Title
IX and gender equity matters to harassment issues and student
hazing.
- For all these reasons, diversity affects your
staff, your players, your fans, your programs and your ability
to win.
